Model Answers and follow up questions to Describe a lesson you learnt IELTS Cue Card:

Model Answer:

Introduction:
Well, our parents and seniors always try to teach us important lessons of life but still there are few things that we learn from our mistakes.

What it was?
Here I would like to talk about a lesson I learnt when I met an accident and got badly injured for committing a blunder.

What exactly happened?
I vividly remember I was almost fifteen years old. Most teenagers of my age are curious to ride motor bikes. I requested my father many times to teach me how to ride a bike but he always refused to do so and warned me not to try until you turn 18 as it is the legal age in my country to ride a vehicle. I always used to keep on thinking and dreaming riding a bike at full speed. One day, I was home alone as my parents were out of town.

I took it as an opportunity and invited one of my friends at home and out of curiosity we took the bike on the main road. I was driving it comfortably with my friend sitting behind and all of a sudden, we met an accident at an intersection due to over speeding my leg got fractured and I was rushed to a hospital.

Luckily my friend escaped any major injury. My parents also arrived as soon as they received the news and they were really concerned. At this point my father was very angry for not obeying him but he was controlling his anger somehow.

What lesson did you learn? and Conclusion:
This was the time when I apologised my father and felt sorry whole-heartedly and said I have learnt the lesson and now I will think about riding a bike only when I will turn 18 and will have enough maturity to handle a vehicle safely on road.

Note: You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.

Model Answers and follow up questions to describe something you received for free IELTS cue card:

Model Answer 1:

Introduction: and What it was?
Well, it is well said there is nothing like free lunches but recently I had a wonderful experience when I received a Back-pack as a freebie while shopping at a store. Actually, last month I was at a shopping mall for some shopping. I wanted to buy a pair of shoes so without thinking twice I checked out my favourite brand store Adidas. As I entered the store person greeted me and probed to understand what exactly I am after. After that, he showed me a few pairs of sports shoes and to be very honest.

I wanted to buy all those as all were really tempting. Now the question was which one to buy. He told me about the discounts on various articles which were between 30% to 50%. Finally, I purchased the one in my favourite colour white with a comfortable sole and I paid Rs. 8000.

Who you received it from? and Where you received it?
At this time, the sales guy informed me that the company offers free backpacks to buyers who shop worth Rs. 7500 or more. I could not believe it as the bag itself was worth Rs. 2000 and I had to pay nothing for it.

Actually, I was in dire need of a backpack as I am a student and I use it on regular basis. My old bag was a bit torn off and needed to be replaced. In fact, it was super stylish with a massive logo of ADIDAS with a lock and a separate sleeve to keep Laptop that I had to carry in a separate bag otherwise.

And how you felt about it? and Conclusion:
I was so happy to receive such a useful item for free and I thanked the store person wholeheartedly. Overall, it was an amazing experience that I had of receiving something for free.

Model Answer 2:

Introduction
It is human nature that person feels excited and happy whenever he gets something for free. An interesting poll has shown how getting something for free can boost one’s mental health and even keep the glow for up to a week. Today I would like to talk about an experience when I got something for free.

What it was? And Who you received it from?
I got a shopping coupon worth rupees three thousand for the Adidas brand. I received it from a showroom where I bought a Lenovo Notebook.

Where you received it?
A few days back I went to Chandigarh to buy a new Lenovo notebook. I went to the electronic appliances showroom. The salesman showed me many types of laptops and notebooks and told me the various offers that the company was giving to their customer. I selected Lenovo Idea Pad D330 Intel Celeron N4020 10.1″HD IPS Detachable 2-in-1 Laptop (4GB/128GB eMMC/Windows 10/1 Yr Warranty/Mineral Grey/1.11kg).I paid about 25,000.

how you felt about it?
After the payment, a salesperson took a box and came to me. It was filled with different envelopes. He told me to pick one from them. I picked one. I felt astonished when I opened it. It was a shopping coupon worth rupee three thousand. The manager told me that they gave this offer only to those people who do shopping above than 24000.

Conlusion:
On the same day, I went to the Adidas showroom and bought a tracksuit.

Model Answer 3:

Introduction:

  • I have received many free things in my life, but I would like to talk about a free coffee which I got on my birthday.
  • When I visit Delhi or Chandigarh I love to visit Starbucks as I love their coffee.

What it was? and Who you received it from? and Where you received it?

  • During one of my first few visits, one of the salespersons in Starbucks told me to get a Starbucks Card as I am a regular coffee drinker.
  • She told me that the card was free and there are some amazing perks for regular coffee drinkers.
  • I was sceptical at first, as there is no Starbucks in my city and I was wondering how many times would I actually drink one.
  • But after some persuasion by the salesgirl, I got one, nonetheless.
  • One of the benefits was a free coffee during the birthday month.
  • I didn’t know this.
  • So, by chance, I visited a Starbucks in June, which is my birthday month.
  • When I was about to pay, the salesperson asked me if I was due a free coffee because of my birthday month and should he make this order the free one.
  • I wasn’t expecting it but more than that I didn’t ask for it, he offered it.
  • I then inquired whether it could be any coffee and if I could make modifications like adding whip cream.
  • When he said, I told them to make it a mocha and add whip cream.
  • I normally don’t make these additions because their coffee is already very expensive.
  • I thought there would be no better opportunity to try it.
  • So, I went for it.

And how you felt about it?

  • I really enjoyed the coffee.
  • If I would have paid for it, it would have cost me around Rs 400.
  • It wasn’t a big amount but it made me so happy like I had won a lottery.
  • That day, I got a card made for my mother and my sister as well.
  • However, then the salesperson told me that the free birthday month coffee is applicable only when we buy coffee worth Rs 5000 in a year.

Conclusion:

  • I don’t think they will drink so much coffee, but I have already started looking forward to next June and the next free coffee.

IELTS Speaking Part 3 : Follow up Questions

Here some examples of follow up questions that you may asked during your speaking part 3 by examiner related to cue card “describe something you received for free”.

1. Do you think people should pay for higher education? Why?
I definitely think that people should pay for higher education themselves. I think people should only go for higher education when they are really interested. Paying it for ourselves means- we do it only when we really want to. At the same time, I also feel that government should provide scholarships and loans to poor students so that they don’t leave education because of money.

2. Is it good or bad for people to have a free education in the future?
I think free primary education is good because everyone should get primary education but I think higher education should be paid for by the student themselves. Actually, I don’t think it is possible for the government to fund higher education for everyone.

3. What free gifts do companies usually give to their customers?
In India, I think companies give small gifts like pens, calendars and cups, etc to customers. They are free gifts for customers but in a way, they are advertising for the company. Then, there are also deals like buy one- get one free, which are technically gifts, but in a way – the prices factor in the free gift such that the company is still in profit.

4. Why do customers like to receive free gifts from companies?
I think there is no better feeling than getting something for free. It is just human nature, when we get something for free- we feel lucky. When we buy something, we are always thinking, whether we could have gotten something better for the same price, whether we were cheated, but when we get something for free, we feel like we couldn’t get a better deal because what’s better than free.

Model Answers and follow up questions to describe a time when you saw a lot of plastic waste (e.g. in a park, on the beach, etc.) IELTS Cue Card:

Model Answer 1:

Introduction:
Unfortunately, plastic waste is becoming a serious threat and it is not uncommon to see plastic waste in our surroundings.

Here I am going to talk about my recent visit to a tourist attraction where I got disappointed to see plastic waste. Actually, there is a famous lake not far from my town, where people often go for picnic and enjoy boating.

Where and when you saw the plastic waste?
Last month, I too went there with my friends on weekend and we found this place extremely beautiful because of the natural scene. But, as we approached near the lake we felt extremely bad as there was loads of plastic waste in it.

Why there was a lot of plastic waste?
The fact is that, lots of people visit this place and often carry food in plastic containers and plastic bottles , but after having it they dump it carelessly. We saw plastic bags, wrappers, cans, plastic bottles and much more, which was not only ruining the beauty of the place but also affecting the marine life.

What you did do after you saw it?
In fact, we clicked few photographs by the lake and in the background there were piles of plastic waste. Being concerned about the environment, we approached the management. We requested them to keep the place clean and place dustbins for proper disposal of waste and if possible put a ban on plastic at site. In fact, we voluntarily cleaned the place with the cleaning staff which was enough to make others understand their responsibility as well.

Conclusion:
The management appreciated our efforts and promised us that they will do everything possible to keep the place neat and tidy in future.

IELTS Speaking Part 3 : Follow up Questions

Here some examples of follow up questions that you may asked during your speaking part 3 by examiner related to cue card “describe a time when you saw a lot of plastic waste (e.g. in a park, on the beach, etc.)”.

1. Do you think we should use plastic products?
No, I don’t think that usage of plastic products should be encouraged. Every day in the newspaper we read about how plastics are destroying our planet, and there is not much we can do about it except prohibit their usage. Most of the plastic waste cannot be recycled and ends up in landfills or is dumped in the sea

2. How can we reduce our use of plastic?
There are many simple everyday things that we can do to reduce our plastic consumption. For example, people can always carry a steel water bottle with them so that they don’t have to buy a plastic one. Another thing that people can do is to use jute or any other cloth bags for carrying goods from grocery stores.

3. What kinds of plastic waste are often seen in your country?
The most common plastic waste in my country would definitely be the plastic bags that people use for grocery shopping. The plastic water or soft drink bottles take the second spot.

4. Why do people like to use plastic products?
I think there are two main reasons behind it. One is that plastic is more convenient as it doesn’t get damaged easily and keeps the goods safe and dry. Secondly, plastic is cheaper as compared to metal or other alternatives.

Model Answers and follow up questions to describe a musical instrument that you learnt/play IELTS Cue Card:

Model Answer:

Introduction:
Well, music is something that touches the soul of every human, and it is not uncommon to see people expressing themselves through music and learning to play musical instruments.

Name of the instrument?
I will definitely take the opportunity to talk about my favourite musical instrument, which is the harmonium, and it is I actually the one that I can play as well. I vividly remember that when I was at school, I learned to play this musical instrument.

How it works?
Actually, my school used to organise music classes, and I attended music classes where I got the opportunity to learn harmonium from my music trainer. It is actually a device that looks very much like a wooden box, and there are dozen of keys in white and black. It actually operates with the movement of air. As we press the button, it produces different sounds, and with those different sounds, we can create Melodies.

How you learnt it?
I must say that harmonium is one of the easiest instruments to learn as it took me hardly a month to learn it. In fact, my music teacher, Mr. Singh, chose me to play this instrument in the morning assembly during prayer time, which was an honour for me. Not only at school, I also started singing hymns at religion places, especially Gurudwara, because the harmonium is one of the most traditional instrument used while singing the hymns.

And why it is your favourite?
Well, on my fourteenth birthday, my father gifted me a brand new Harmonium that I am still keeping, and I often play it whenever I have some free time. I must say that this instrument really helps me to relax my mind because whenever I am upset and stressed, I play it continuously for hours to release my emotions.

I highly recommend every youngster to develop an interest in playing and learning to play a musical instrument as it really helps in releasing emotion and developing interest towards music.

Conclusion:
Overall, the harmonium is one device or an instrument that I learnt when I was a child.

Introduction:
Well, space has always been an area of interest for me, and I feel lucky I know one such person who works on space exploration.

Who the person is? and How you know about him/her? and What exactly he/her does?
He is none other but my cousin, Karan, who, after completing his higher education, had an opportunity to work with NASA, the leading space agency. Luckily a few months ago, he was visiting India, and I had an opportunity to meet him personally during this time.

During this time, he told me about the various projects NASA is working on, but the one that fascinated me the most was the “Holidays on Moon”. I showed my curiosity to know more about this project, and Karan gave me all the details. He said NASA had a billion-dollar agreement with Elon Musk to make space travel a reality.

A massive hotel is under construction, and soon it would be ready. Actually, there are many travel enthusiasts who are looking for adventure. They do not find anything interesting on this planet earth anymore. For that reason, they want to travel to space and experience space conditions along with low gravity, and their dream will come true very soon.

However, space travel is not everyone’s cup of tea because it costs millions. At the same time, there can be chances of mishaps which often create fear in the mind of holiday-makers. To be honest, I found this meeting to be extremely informative as prior to it, I was completely unaware about space travel.

How do you feel about it? and Conclusion:
I wish this mission remains successful and, in the future, it becomes pocket-friendly so that more and more people could avail the opportunity of traveling in space.

Model Answers and follow up questions to describe a time when you spent night without electricity IELTS Cue Card:

Model Answer 1:

Introduction:
Well, living in India, it is not uncommon to spend nights without electricity.

When it was? and Where you were?
And one such experience I had lately and it was the time when a few of the friends of my brother were invited for his birthday celebration. Actually, last month it was my brother’s birthday, and he invited a few of his friends to stay overnight and have a celebration. Ofcourse, we were super excited about the celebration.

What exactly happened? and Why the power went off?
Somewhere around 9 pm, we had the cake-cutting ceremony, and my brother blew the candles. Out of a sudden, the light went off, and it was actually because of a short circuit. Unfortunately, it was not possible to get the problem fixed this late at night. So, we had to spend the night without power.

What did you do afterwards?
Despite the power cut, we decided to continue the celebration. My brother’s friend Karan is a wonderful singer. So, he kept singing for hours, and we enjoyed his singing, and we danced along it. As we were enjoying the singing and dancing, the weather changed, and it started to rain.

So we decided to sit in the balcony to enjoy gossip as well as enjoy the pleasant weather. We played a few games, especially the talent hunt, and we gossiped for long hours. During this time, we also enjoyed the snacks that we had prepared and enjoying the food in the moonlight and candlelight was more like enjoying candlelight dinner at a restaurant and I must say that it was really a great fun enjoying the gossips and talking about different matters and we felt more connected than that we had felt watching the movie or playing computer games which means we were not at all affected by the power cut.

Conclusion:
Now, it was somewhere around 2 am, and we were all exhausted, and we never knew when we hit the bed and fall asleep. Overall, it was the time or experience I had of spending a night without electricity.

Model Answers and follow up questions to describe an English class/lesson that you enjoyed IELTS Cue Card:

Model Answer:

Introduction:

  • English is not my mother tongue.
  • I had learnt English in my childhood.

When did you take the class?

  • However, because of a lack of practice, I thought I needed to revise my basics before I took the IELTS exam.
  • So, I recently attended an English class while I was starting my preparation.
  • Actually, when I started the preparation, I got some of my writing tasks evaluated by teachers.
  • My teachers told me that I was making grammatical mistakes and I was making errors in the usage of tenses, especially.
  • At first, I picked up the grammar book by Rennin Martin, but it was too big.
  • I think I read the first two chapters and then gave up.
  • I didn’t have the time or the patience to read the whole book.

When did you take the class? and Where it was?

  • So, I searched for some English tenses lessons on YouTube.
  • There I came across a group of lectures on various tenses on a channel called Learn English with Milly.
  • The lectures had me hooked from the get-go.

What did the teacher do that made you enjoy it?

  • The most interesting part of the lectures was that they made comparisons between the tenses.
  • It was like the lectures had been custom-made to address the problem I was facing because the main problem I was facing was in tenses.
  • The teacher explained everything in detail, and although the lectures were long, I didn’t get bored.
  • I think it was because of the humour.
  • After every few minutes, the teacher said something that grabbed my attention and made me alert.
  • I never felt like I was attending a lecture but rather enjoying a fun conversation with time.
  • I think my English has improved a lot because of those lessons, and I am really glad I stumbled upon those videos.

IELTS Speaking Part 3 : Follow up Questions

Here some examples of follow up questions that you may asked during your speaking part 3 by examiner related to cue card “describe an English class/lesson that you enjoyed ”.

1. What are the benefits of learning a foreign language?
There are many benefits of learning a foreign language. Firstly, it helps students academically, as the skills they learn in one language like comprehension and finding out the main theme of a paragraph can also be applied to their language. Secondly, it opens up more opportunities in the future. For example, it can help students pursue higher education in a foreign country. Similarly, a foreign language can help people secure a job in a company, which deals with foreign clients.

2. What are the benefits of being a foreign language teacher?
The main benefit of teaching another language is that the person can enhance their knowledge of the language. I think people learn much more about the language when they teach than when they study it.
Secondly, foreign languages also tend to get paid better and they might also get opportunities to travel abroad. Finally, I feel the language classes have the most diversity in terms of age. I have seen people as old as seventy learning French and German. So, it never gets boring teaching a foreign language as people get to meet different people.

3. Will computers replace foreign language teachers in the future?
I think computers are certainly beneficial in helping students learn a foreign language. However, I do not think computers can replace language teachers completely. Computers can help students improve their grammar and pronunciation but they cannot help students develop or express ideas. Moreover, there are cultural aspects to a language, which can be only taught by a teacher in my opinion.

4. Is grammar the most difficult part about learning a foreign language?
No, I don’t think grammar is the most difficult part as there are certain rules of grammar. I think it is logical and so it can be learnt with practice. However, pronunciation can be very tricky as I find there are no fixed rules to it.

5. Do you think grammar is important in language learning?
Yes, I think grammar is really important in language learning. If the grammar is wrong, the sentence can give out a completely different meaning and it can lead to misunderstandings and embarrassment.
For example, I taught, and I was taught mean completely different things, just the presence of was in the middle – changes the meaning completely.
